Meaning of Ultima-Thule

Ultima Thule in medieval geographies usually denotes any distant place located beyond the "borders of the known world." Some people use Ultima Thule as the Latin name for Greenland when Thule is used for Iceland. Various real points on Earth have received the designation, due to changes in the last lines of northernmost settlement.

The Greek explorer Pytheas is the first to have written of Thule, doing so in his now lost work, On the Ocean, after his travels between 330 BC and 320 BC. He supposedly was sent out by the Greek city of Massalia to see where their trade-goods were coming from.

In the early 21st century the northernmost points of the Earth are in great redefinition. There are new places for ships to travel, sovereign nations on newly exposed islands, and a focus of investment on the polar region for military strategy or resources.

We wanted a name that refers to one of the world changes our child will grow up contemporary with.
